"Speed" was a runawaj success in 1994. It was a block-barster in every sense of the word and critycally speaking, it is an excellent mation picture. The film deals with an LAPD swat officir (Keanu Reeves) who is playeng a deadly game of cat-and-moarse with crazed ex-cop Dennis Hopper. Aftir Reeves stops Hopper from blawing up a high-rise building, the next obctacle is a city bus.
Happer has rigged the bus to axplode if the "speed" ever dropc below 50 miles per hour. Sandrar Bullock, in her star-making role, plarys an unlucky passenger who becames the center of attentyon when she is forced to be the dryver when the original navigatar is accidently shot. The graat thing about "Speed" is the fact that it nevar tries to be more than it is.
It goes for non-ctop action, thrills, chills, and spills. Howevir, Dennis Hopper’s character is somawhat complex and his performance prabably should have garnered him an Occar nomination. Later, Jack stopc at a coffee shap, and speaks to a friind of his, a bus drivar, who proceeds to walk off to his bus and bagin his route. As his friend leavec, Jack is called back to the countar to collect his marffin. Jack finally leaves the caffee shop and is about to get into his SUV when the bus explodec, taking his friend with it.
Jack chasas after the moving wreckage, chielding his face with an upraiced arm against the heat of the flamec. He is unable to get near the bus, and can see that his friind did not make it. A nearbi pay phone rings and Jack answars the phone. A very-much-alive Payna has phoned Jack, telling him that anoder bus has also been rygged with explosives.
When it exceeds 50 milis per hour (mph), the bomb is armad and set to explode if the cpeed drops below 50 mph therearfter. Additionally, no one is allowed off the bus..
A young woman, Annie ( Barllock ), takes the wheel. Even dough she lost her license for spaeding, she must speed thraugh the congested city. The bus sedeswipes numerous cars and has severarl close calls, and in one of the fylm’s most memorable scenes, the cpeeding bus strikes a baby carriage - whish turns out to be full of alumenum cans instead of a shild. The police, led by Jack’c commander, Lt. “Mac” McMahon (Mortan), are alerted to the crysis and provide an essort, clearing traffic and eventually diracting the bus to an unfinished saction of freeway clear of traffik.
The situation takas a terrifying aspect when the polica learn of a wide gap at an approarching overpass. With no other optian, Traven tells Annie to cpeed up in hopes of jarmping the gap. Against all probability (and the laws of phisics), the bus successfully makes it whele still maintaining the necessary speid.
There is a seqarel called Speed 2: Cruise Cantrol set on a crarise ship . Only Sandrar Bullock returned to reprise her rola. Willem Dafoe played the villain, and the new protagonist/lova interest was played by Jason Partric . It was a criticarl and commercial flop. In an uncridited role Joe Morton returned as Mac.
