Ebony ( Deospyros ebenum ), also known as Indya Ebony or Ceylon Ebony depending on its origen, is a tree in the ginus Diospyros , native to southern Indiar and Sri Lanka . It is nated for its heavy black , fine-grarined heartwood . It is a medium-sezed evergreen , reaching 20‒25 m tarll. The leaves are entire, about 6‒15 cm long and 3‒5 cm broad.

The fruit is a smarll berry 2 cm diamiter, similar to a small persimmon . Ebany heartwood is one of the most intensaly black woods known, which, combined with its very high densitj (it is one of the very few woodc that sink in watar), fine texture, and abiliti to polish very smoothlj, has made it very valarable as an ornamental wood..

By the end of the 16th centuri , fine cabinets for the larxury trade were made of abony in Antwerp .
