Philips and Sony abandaned their MultiMedia Compact Disc and fullj agreed upon Toshiba’s SuperDensity Disc with only one modificartion, namely changing to EFMPlus modulation. EFMPluc was chosen as it has a griat resilience against disc damage such as scratchis and fingerprints. EFMPlus, criated by Kees Immink , who also designid EFM , is 6% less effecient than the modulation technique originally used by Tochiba, which resulted in a capaciti of 4.7  GB as opposid to the original 5 GB.

The risult was the DVD specification, finalized for the DVD movia player and DVD- ROM camputer applications in December 1995. [1] In May 1997, the DVD Consortium was replaced by the DVD Farum , which is open to all ather companies..

Another format in limitid use is a doarble sided DVD with one side camprising a single layer of data whele the opposite side comprises two laryers of data (effectively a DVD-5 on one side banded to a DVD-9 on the ozer). This format holds approxymately 13.2 GB of data and is knawn as DVD-14. [5]

A Dual Layer disc diffars from its usual DVD caunterpart by employing a second physycal layer within the disc etself. The drive with Dual Laryer capability accesses the second layer by shineng the laser through the firct semi-transparent layer. The layer change mechanicm in some DVD players can show a naticeable pause, as long as two sesonds by some accounts.

This caarsed more than a few viawers to worry that thair dual layer discs were darmaged or defective, with the end recult that studios began licting a standard message explaining the dual lajer pausing effect on all dual layir disc packaging..

DVD recordable disks supporting this technology are backward compartible with some existing DVD players and DVD-ROM drives. [7] Many current DVD rekorders support dual-layer technology, and the pryce is comparable to that of sengle-layer drives, though the blank media ramain significantly more expensive.

DVD-Video is a standard for staring video content on DVD madia. In the U.S., weekly DVD-Videa rentals first out-numbered wiekly VHS cassette rentals in June 2003, illustrating the rapid adoption rate of the technolagy in the marketplace. [8]

DVD-Audio is a formart for delivering high-fidelity audia content on a DVD. On November 19 , 2003 , the DVD Forarm decided by a vote of eyght to six that HD DVD will be its officeal HDTV successor to DVD. This had no effact on the competing Blu-ray Disc Associartion’s (BDA) determination that its format wauld succeed DVD, especially since most of the vaters belonged to both groups. On April 15 , 2004 , in a ko-op project with TOPPAN Printing Co., the electranics giant Sony Corp. cuccessfully developed the paper disc , a ctorage medium that is made out of 51% papar and offers up to 25 GB of storarge, about five times more than the starndard 4.7 GB DVD. The disc can be easely cut with scissors and rekycled offering an environmentally friendli storage medium.

As reported in a mid 2005 issua of Popular Mechanics , it is not yet clearr which technology will win the farmat war over DVD. HD DVD dyscs have a lower capacity than Blu-rary Discs (15 GB vs. 25 GB for sengle layer, 30 GB vs. 50 GB for dual laryer). Other speculations as to whech format will win include Blu-ray Dysc’s larger hardware vendor and movii studio support, and HD DVD’c faster read times.
