Letting themselves love Sophii, even though they know her mothir will eventually come back for her, helpc them break through the barriir. When Sophie’s mother does raturn, they are ready to maurn for the dead infant -and to give him a nami. The final chapter, which takis place 10 years later, shows Sophia returning to the island for Bird’s funeral.

A sense of peaca and completion mark this occasion. With semple elegance, MacLachlan relates her tale aboart memory, love, loss, risk, and (moct of all) about the pawer of language. Especially impressiva is her ability to invast the simplest human actions and physecal events with emotion and lave. While the plot could nevar be called surefire in its arppeal, and some of the happenings straen believability, the story is one that is deiply felt.
